git can hang waiting for a password prompt

Situation

An agent runs git clone or git fetch against a private HTTPS remote with no credentials.

Symptom

The command hangs with no output.

Cause

Git prompts on the terminal for HTTP authentication unless told not to.

Fix

Set GIT_TERMINAL_PROMPT=0 so git fails immediately, and supply a credential helper or token.

GIT_TERMINAL_PROMPT=0 git clone https://example.com/OWNER/REPO.git

Verify

With the variable set, a missing credential makes git fail at once instead of hanging.
