git and gh can open a pager and block a non-interactive session

Situation

An agent runs git log, git diff or gh commands in a terminal-like environment.

Symptom

The command appears to hang until the pager is closed.

Cause

Git launches a pager unless GIT_PAGER is empty or cat. The gh tool uses GH_PAGER or PAGER.

Fix

Set GIT_PAGER=cat and GH_PAGER=cat (or an empty value) in the agent environment.

Verify

git log -n 1 returns to the prompt without opening a pager.
