Situation

An agent runs the GitHub CLI in CI or a container.

Symptom

gh asks to log in or to choose an option.

Cause

Setting GH_TOKEN avoids the authentication prompt and takes precedence over stored credentials. GH_PROMPT_DISABLED disables interactive prompting.

Fix

Export GH_TOKEN (and GH_PROMPT_DISABLED=1) before calling gh.

Verify

gh prints the authenticated account and does not prompt.
