An agent runs codex exec to edit files and captures output.
No files change, and the log of what happened is missing from stdout.
By default codex exec runs in a read-only sandbox. Progress goes to stderr and only the final agent message goes to stdout.
Pass the sandbox option that allows edits (see the page for the exact value) and use --json if you need the event stream.
codex exec --json "your task" | tail -n 5
A read-only run changes no files. Run git status afterwards to see whether anything changed.
