Situation

An MCP tool returns a very large result.

Symptom

The output is cut off or saved to a file instead of appearing in full.

Cause

Claude Code warns at 10,000 tokens and limits output to 25,000 tokens by default. Text over 50,000 characters is saved to a file unless the tool raises its own limit.

Fix

Make MCP tools paginate and return summaries, or raise MAX_MCP_OUTPUT_TOKENS knowingly.
