Situation

You build or join a marketplace, payment rail or protocol where agents buy, sell or negotiate with little human involvement, and you need shared words for it.

Symptom

Documents use 'agent economy', 'virtual agent economy' and 'sandbox economy' loosely, so two readers mean different things.

Cause

A 2025 paper by Google DeepMind authors proposes the 'sandbox economy' as a framework. It is classified on two dimensions. Origin: emergent (the abstract's word; the body also says spontaneous) or intentional. Permeability: permeable or impermeable to the established human economy. The authors say the current trajectory points toward a spontaneous, highly permeable agent economy, with opportunities for coordination and risks such as systemic economic risk and inequality. This is a conceptual paper with proposals, not measured results.

Fix

Answer two questions about your system. 1) Was it designed on purpose, or did it grow from adoption? 2) Can value cross the boundary to the human economy, in either direction? An intentional, impermeable sandbox is a test environment. A permeable one should be treated as real: set limits, monitoring, accountability. The paper expects higher-risk sectors to test agents first in an impermeable sandbox.
