Situation

Your agent keeps its own conversation history (store:false or a resumed session) and replays earlier reasoning items that carry encrypted_content, then sends the next turn to a different region, API key or organization, or a different model.

Symptom

The first request works, but a follow-up or resumed session fails before inference with a 400 validation error.

Cause

Reasoning and compaction items with encrypted_content can only be decrypted where they were created. Reports show failures after a model switch in the same thread, after cross-region routing on Amazon Bedrock (including routing that the client cannot see), and after a load balancer sent the follow-up to a deployment with a different API key or organization.

Fix

Keep follow-ups on the same deployment, region and organization that produced the encrypted items, or start a new thread when you switch model or region. If you must move, keep the visible messages and tool results but drop the old encrypted reasoning and compaction items from the replayed input.

Verify
